(Video Tutorial) Sugar Cookie Recipe: Our Cookies for Santa

Hello Beautiful Nesters!  We hope you had a safe and happy start to this happy holiday season.  It has always been a tradition in our house to leave cookies for Santa.  Even though our boys know the true meaning of Christmas we all enjoy using our imaginations and creating magic for the holidays.  Santa’s special sweet treat will always be waiting for him to give him that sugar rush he needs to keep going!  We wanted to share with you this delicious recipe because as you know sugar cookies can be made any time of the year for any event!

The boys get excited every year when making cookies and they place them strategically by the tree so Santa can have a late night snack.  This years cookie of choice was homemade sugar cookies.  They wanted to roll the dough out and cut out shapes and I must say they turned out pretty great.  They also made some drop cookies.

Here's the recipe if you would like to give it a try. 
Here's what you'll need:
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 sticks softened butter (1 cup)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract 
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt 
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Beat the butter and sugar until nice and fluffy.  Beat in your egg and extracts.  Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl and add 1 cup at a time of your flour mixture to the egg and butter mixture until everything is well incorporated.  You should have a nice dough to roll out.  Divide your dough into to large balls.  Do not refrigerate this dough.
Dust your rolling pin with flour and your rolling surface as well and roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick.  Using your desired cookie cutter, cut out your shapes by dipping your cookie cutter into flour before you cut out your shape.
 Leave at least 1 inch spaces between each cookie when placing them on your cookie sheet.  If your cookies touch they will not turn out right.  Place your cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet pan and bake for about 7-10 minutes until your cookies have brown edges.  Take your cookies out and let them cool down slightly before placing them onto a cooling wire rack.  Decorate with icing, sugar sprinkles or eat them as is.  Yum!

The final results were pretty good for my little chefs!  We ate a few before bed and waited patiently for Santa to arrive!
